Overview
This project is being done with Mrs. Armstrong's 6th grade class at New Palestine Intermediate School. For this project, my partner and I go to her school every other day. During this time, we try to form relationships with the kids. Some of the students in her class don't have the greatest home lives. The goal of us going to that class is to give those students the attention that they need. We play games with them, help them finish assignments, and we do anything Mrs. Armstrong needs us to do.
Week 1 and 2
Our first day there was very awkward because the students weren't expecting us! We introduced ourselves and just observed the first day. The next day we came in, we took a student to the room next door to help her get her missing assignments completed. It's very difficult because some of the students don't want to do they work. With this in mind, we try to make it fun for them. We engage in different conversations, and then direct them back to their work. The next day, we got to walk around the class a little and socialize with the students during their snack time. We got to know a little bit more about the students and they got to know us. All we really want to do is serve as a role model for these students, as well as be someone they can talk to about anything. During the second week, we spent most of our time with the same girl the week before. She really struggles when it comes to doing her work, but we were able to get her almost caught back up with all of her assignments. Below are pictures from the day that they had snack time:
Final Part
This project lasted around a month. We went to NPI every other day for that entire month. Every day that we went, we did something different. Some days we would help the kids with their math stations. Other days we would help Mrs. Armstrong with printing and laminating things she needed done. We also went to a different room with one student to continue to help her get caught up on her work, help her through assignments, and be there for her to talk to. The pictures below show us working on the math stations with students. Overall, this was a fun little project. We never knew what to expect each day. It's nice to be able to connect with the younger students and be positive influences in their life at school. It was a neat experience and I had a lot of fun doing it.
